Upon the completion of a Masters Degree at the University of Technology Sydney, Garu travelled South East Asia, stumbling upon work within the hustle of Indonesia's Capital, Jakarta in early 2008 for the firm SDA.

Awarded "Top Ten Asian Architects" award from 2005-2010, Sekawan Design Inc. Arsitek (SDA) allowed Garu to pursue several schemes for Commercial and Residential projects within Indonesia in 2008.

In the beginning of 2009, the firm exported Garu to Abu Dhabi and established an International team of Architects and Project Managers. The project was the re-design and Coordination, through to Construction Drawings and Site Response for a 5 Star Hotel and Serviced Apartments on Al Reem Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The team headed by the SDA Australian Principle, managed to succeed with the following:

- Budget reduced by more than 50%, reduction of the hotel tower by 9 floors; reduction of the total floor area by 21,000sqm.

- Whilst increasing 16 extra rooms and Maintaining B.O.H. facilities all within the existing P.T. concrete structure.

- Design and Implementation of an effective smoke Management System approved by local Authorities.

PROJECT: BENHIL MIXED-USE - JAKARTA

1) Five level mall with above ground car park (500 cars), top floor Restaurants and Cinema, totaling 33,407sqm of saleable area.
2) 15 level Office Tower 27,937sqm, with shared vertical circulation core with the Hotel.
3) 225 rooms at 15 levels, 3Star Boutique Hotel and Hotel Facilities utilizing Office Rooftop, total of 10,201sqm.
4) 96 retail units fronting the main street (8,206sqm), which will be sold to fund the project.
5) Enclosed pedestrian link from the mall to the office tower.
